Gefuroxime in Treatment for Severely Infected Patients

Abstract
The bacteriological datas on 50 cases of specimens were evaluated and among these, the cefuroxime-treated 30 patients which were snsceptible to cefuroxime on the result of sensitivity test were evaluated at Busan National University Hospital for 4 months, from Aug. to Nov. 1979.
The results were as follows :
1. The 66 colonies of 13 species of bacteria were isolated from the 50 cases of specimen, and the single gram-positive bacteria infections were 18 cases, the single gram-negative bacteria infections were 17 cases, the mixed infections were 15 cases, and the gram-positive becteria colonies were 30, the gram-negative bacteria colonies were 36, and the kinds of bacteria were escheria soli in 22 colonies (33.35vo), and staphylococcus in 21 colonies (31.8%),
2. The overall sensitive results (+, -}1-, Off) in the antibiotic sensitivity pattern were seen in 42 cases; to cefuroxime in 31 cases, to kanamycin in 29 cases, to novobiocin ¢¥,,in 28 cases, to chloramphenicol in 27 cases. Eight cases were resistant to all examined antibiotics.
3. The most sensitive result (,%) in the antibiotic susceptibility pattern was seen in 20 cases; markedly sensitive to cefuroxime in 13 cases, to kanamycin in 8 cases, to chloramphenicol in 7 cases, and novobiocin in 6 cases.
4. The clincal results of cefuroxime-treated 30 patient were cured in 20 patients, irnporved in 7 patients, unchanged in 2 patients, and expired in 1 patient from septicemia.
5. Although the selection of antibiotics must be based on the results of sensitivity test, in our clinical survey, the single antibiotic therapy was excellent in cefuroxime-treated patients, and the combined antibiotic therapy was recommended to cefuroxime and kanamycin or to cefuroxime and gentamicin.
